Mercury – Reception

Happy New Year!

Great to see all the children in Mercury Class fresh and ready for a new term. Thank you all so much for your lovely Christmas cards and gifts. We really appreciate it.

This half term we are going to be learning about outer space. The children are really excited and enthusiastic about this. We will be using non-fiction texts to find out about planets and astronauts and will focus our writing on this theme. We will also be reading stories such as ‘The Dinosaur that Popped a Planet’ and ‘Beegu’.

In writing we will be labelling, writing simple sentences and lists and encouraging children to use their phonic knowledge to sound words out. In reading we will be continuing to practise the skills of blending to read words and reading tricky words on sight.

In maths we will be continuing to practise and apply the skills of addition and subtraction and use these skills to solve problems. We will also continue to look at teen numbers and what they are made up of and will be learning to count in 2s and 10s.

This half term we will be looking a lot at how to keep ourselves safe. This includes being safe from strangers and being safe online.

We will have lots of fun creative space collages, models and paintings as well as taking part in experiments and getting messy. This really helps with the development of language and vocabulary.

Please continue to practise the letter sounds and tricky words from the resources sent home and remember to share your child’s reading book with them a few times every week.

Please come and see us if you would like any advice or have any concerns or you want to share with us something wonderful that your child has done at home.
