Welcome to Class Mars

Mars Class. Summer Term 2017.

A warm welcome back to school after the Easter break from the Mars teaching team.

The staffing situation will be similar to last term with Mr Jubb working on Mondays and Tuesdays and alternative Wednesdays, while Mrs Duffield will teach on Thursdays and Fridays. Our Deputy Head teacher, Mr Dyer, will teach on alternative Wednesdays.  Again, all ably assisted by Mrs Lynch-Burns and Mr Woods.

The team have prepared a topic around the subject of TIME TRAVELLERS for this term.

We will be learning all about the Vikings; who they were, where they came from, how they lived, what jobs they did, what tales they used to tell and why they are an important part of life in Yorkshire. Our reading and writing activities will be based around this topic.

Science work will be based mainly on learning how plants grow well and investigating the different rocks and fossils found in Britain

Our intention in music this term is to learn a variety of songs about the Viking gods and the re-telling of the Viking sagas.

PE kits will be needed on Mondays and Wednesdays. (PE kit is a dark pair of shorts, white shirt and a pair of black plimsolls.) Our theme for this term will be “invasion games”.  We will also be competing in outdoor athletics activities as well as practising for our Sports Day.

Our class will be swimming each THURSDAY.  Please remember to bring in your swimming kit and towel.

Spellings for children to practice at home will be found in their home/school reading dairies at the beginning of each week.

Homework will be given out by Mrs Duffield during the second part of the week.

During this term our class reading books will be Viking at School by Jeremy Strong and Viking Boy written by Tony Bradman.

In maths, our class will be learning about fractions – recognising and comparing equivalent fractions, and solving problems that involve fractions. In addition, the children will be looking at the properties of shape – recognising angles, 2D and 3D shapes, and vertical and horizontal lines. We will continue to teach understanding of multiplication and division all the way through to 12X12 and how to apply practically to real world questions. Children would benefit from any additional help in learning their multiplication facts.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact any member of the team.

Best wishes from all the teaching team in Class Mars
