Dear Parents,

Now the children are settled in, I thought this would be a good time to let you know our routines and inform you about all the things your child will need remember each week. Miss Ledger and I have really enjoyed getting to know your children over the first week as they settle into the more structured routine of Year 2.

Morning Routine

As the children are a little older, now is a good time to allow them to become a little more independent by encouraging them to enter the classroom and organise their belongings on their own. The children know that they hang their things up and settle into their morning task quietly. With a room full, this can often be very distracting for them consequently taking them longer to settle. Please make sure your child arrives with their book bag, reading book and reading record book daily. They will need these every day to use in class.

We will be sending homework that will support and reinforce the learning your child is doing in school. One of the most important things you can do with your child is read. Please read to your child. Finding a time to cuddle up and enjoy a story together is rewarding both for your child and yourself. Listening to stories read to them will not only help them develop a love of reading but will support them by introducing to them new vocabulary and sentence structures they can apply within their own writing.

Your child will bring their reading book and reading record book home each day. Please support your child by listening to them read regularly.  Ten minutes is all you need, but this does need to be a nice quiet time. Try paired reading together sometimes too. This will help your child as you model how to use expression while they read along with you.

Also, your child will be bringing a letter home today explaining ‘My Maths’, an online homework resource we will be using throughout school this year. If you have access to the internet, please keep this information safe. I have shown the children ‘My Maths’ today and they will be able to access their first ‘My Maths’ homework next Thursday. Please support your child with this resource and if you have any problems do not hesitate to let us know and we will do our best to help.

Occasionally the children will receive homework through a programme called ‘Purple Maths’ as well. I will send details before this happens.

Your child should have passwords for both these resources in the back of their reading record book. Please check and let me know if this is missing.

P.E will take place every Tuesday and Thursday. However, it will be very useful if we can have the kits in school throughout the week as we sometimes manage to fit in an extra slot. I will send the bags home each Friday. Please make sure all earrings are (preferably) removed on these days and all longer hair is tied back. We cannot support your child to take earrings out and tie hair up so it is much easier and quicker if it can be done at home before they arrive at school. Starting from next week we will be resuming our ‘Daily Mile’. Please can the children bring trainers and a raincoat into school each day for this as they will be so much more comfortable- we do try to get out in all weathers.

Water bottles

Please make sure your child has a named water bottle in school. The children can use the water fountains in school to fill them up. I will make sure they are sent home also every Friday so they can be washed.

Art Shirts

It would be fantastic if you could provide an old shirt the children could wear for art activities. The best ones are old big ones from a parent that they can pop on over their uniform with the sleeves rolled up. We do have some aprons in school but your children do tend to get paint everywhere and the art shirts cover much more! Again, please write your child’s name in- it saves us so much time.

Just because we are asking you to send your child into class on their own doesn’t mean that we don’t want to speak to you! As always, if you have any worries or questions, please pop in and speak to Miss ledger or myself. Obviously, first thing on a morning we are usually very busy with the children, so if it can wait, pop in after school once we have let the children out safely or make an appointment at the office.

Your children have been wonderful, taking in lots of new things, routines and experiences. Thank you again for all your support and the valuable time you spend supporting your child with any homework.
